Learning How to Create a Commercial Ad
Product photography has become one of the most lucrative and popular genres of photography. From Apple to Coca Cola, companies look for photographers who understand light and creative direction to photograph their products. For this project, I had Kaleigh Adamson help me with this commercial product ad for Coca Cola.
Kaleigh and I set up our shots in a dark closet at the Sky Mountain Lodge in Victor, Idaho. On the chair we draped a black cloth so that our product would remain the focal point of our image. Before closing the closet door I automatically focused on the Coca Cola bottle, switched to manual focus to lock the focus and closed the door to completely shut out the ambient light. I set my camera on a 15 second shutter and then had Kaleigh light paint the bottle with a stylus light. Here’s the unedited version of my Coca Cola Commercial Ad:
In post, I darkened the extra light spillage from the light painting on the background and sharpened my image. I then brightened the highlights and spot healed any distracting light on Coca Cola bottle. Lastly, I added some text to give this a Coca Cola advertisement feel. In dark photos like this, the eye immediately goes to what is lit. With that concept in mind, I added the “Let Coke add light to your life” tagline as the message of the product shot. Here’s the final edited image. I hope you enjoy!
